Position Summary
The CAD Operator I uses computer-aided design software to prepare detailed drawings supporting generation, transmission, construction, and system modification projects. Drawings may focus on electrical, mechanical, or civil/structural design.
The CAD Operator develops new drawings and revises existing documents using specifications, design criteria, scopes of work, engineering data, and conceptual sketches. All design packages must follow applicable regulations, codes, drafting practices, and industry standards. These drawings are essential to the safe, reliable, and successful completion of construction projects.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform moderately complex drafting assignments using computer-aided design and drafting software.
- Prepare preliminary sketches, schematic diagrams, wiring diagrams, layout details, assembly drawings, and detailed drawings of parts and related components.
- Develop design and construction drawings using information provided by engineers and designers.
- Create new drawings and revise existing drawings based on project requirements.
- Organize drawings according to accepted drafting practices to support constructability and consistency with the intended design.
- Review drawings for clarity, accuracy, completeness, and compliance with applicable standards.
- Identify and communicate potential technical conflicts or inconsistencies within drawings.
- Request, organize, and incorporate technical data required to complete assignments.
- Coordinate with engineers, designers, project team members, and other CAD operators.
- Support other CAD operators in developing efficient and accurate drawing-production techniques.
- Maintain engineering drawings and related records within an Engineering Document Management System.
- Manage multiple projects while adjusting to changing priorities, requirements, and assignments.
- Complete work according to priorities established by the Design Supervisor.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or technical trade school certification.
- At least two years of applicable CAD operator or drafting experience may be considered in place of technical certification.
- Proficiency with AutoCAD and Raster Design.
- Experience using an Engineering Document Management System.
- Working knowledge of fundamental engineering principles, construction techniques, drafting practices, and industry standards.
- Ability to prepare moderately complex design and construction drawings accurately and efficiently.
- Understanding of drawing-production quality standards and common internal and external CADD issues.
- General understanding of related electrical, mechanical, and civil/structural design disciplines.
- Ability to interpret engineering data, specifications, scopes of work, and conceptual sketches.
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines.
- Effective verbal communication skills for requesting technical information, coordinating work, and identifying potential design conflicts.
Preferred Qualifications
- Technical training or certification in drafting, engineering technology, design, or a related discipline.
- Previous experience supporting generation, transmission, utility, infrastructure, or construction projects.
- Working knowledge of one or more design disciplines: electrical, mechanical, or civil/structural.
- Familiarity with applicable construction regulations, engineering codes, and industry standards
