The New York Botanical Garden’s Manager of Prospect Research manages a comprehensive prospect research program, offering strategic research support, resources and tools to fundraisers across the organization to inform smart, insight-based funder acquisition, engagement, solicitation and stewardship.
The Manager of Prospect Research will report to the Director of Donor Engagement. The Manger will also work closely with the entire Development team, including the Chief Advancement Officer, Associate Vice Presidents, Directors, Major Gift Officers, and the Executive office.
Additionally, this position supports, through actions and conduct, NYBG’s Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Accessibility initiatives and helps to build and maintain an inclusive organization culture throughout the institution.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:
- Monitor and analyze wealth screening results to identify new prospects for gift pipeline and fundraiser portfolios.
- Conduct detailed research on top prospects (new and existing) to determine appropriate capacity ratings and philanthropic inclination.
- Serve as a strategic partner to Development staff to provide research insights that inform donor and prospect engagement strategies using a wide variety of sources to analyze and synthesize intelligence revealing financial capacity, philanthropic tendencies, and linkages to NYBG’s priorities.
- Develop and implement processes for fielding prospect research requests.
- Develop major gift prospect profiles according to prospect research menu, discovering biographical, philanthropic, professional, and financial information of donors and prospects, including individuals, corporations, and foundations
- Map personal, business and institutional relationships between donors, prospects, volunteers, and others connected to NYBG to inform holistic engagement strategies that maximize giving potential across revenue streams
- Work closely with the Development department’s AVPs and Chief Advancement Officer to assign prospects to frontline fundraisers.
- Keep abreast of key donors in the news, philanthropic trends, current economic and world events, and evolving prospect research/management practices and share that information as necessary.
- Maintain a comprehensive and working knowledge of the Raisers Edge database.
- Other tasks and duties reasonably related to job responsibilities.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Minimum of 2-3 years of experience in fundraising or a related industry, with significant
- research responsibilities;
- Well-developed research skills and working knowledge of information search strategies and
- research tools;
- Ability to interpret, analyze, and summarize biographical and complex financial data;
- Exceptional communication (written/verbal) and organizational skills;
- Experience in nonprofit development and/or customer service preferred, ideally with a
- membership or patrons’ program at a comparable cultural institution.
- Propriety, thoughtfulness, and discretion in communicating with donors and colleagues at all
- levels, both verbally and in writing. Excellent judgment.
- Exceptional time management and organizational skills, sharp attention to detail.
- Ability to balance multiple projects in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
- Fluency in Microsoft Word and Excel.
- Knowledge of Raiser’s Edge, SiriusWare, and/or Luminate software preferred.
