The RSHM LIFE Center a non-profit charitable organization founded in 1995 by the Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary (RSHM) and located in Sleepy Hollow, New York. The RSHM LIFE Center offers educational programs and social services to over four hundred immigrant children and adults yearly. In 2013, we began offering Immigration Legal Services in response to changing population demographics and recent developments in immigration. The Immigration Legal Services program is staffed by a full-time attorney, a full-time paralegal and a part-time administrative assistant. The program relies strongly on volunteers who provide myriad services.
The Immigration Legal Program handles a variety of cases: family based matters (petitions, adjustment of status and consular processing); humanitarian based cases (TPS, VAWA, U Visas, Special Immigrant Juveniles and Asylum); DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals); Citizenship; and individuals in removal proceedings (non-detained cases only).
The legal intern will work directly with the attorney and paralegal on a variety of cases. There will be strong client contact. The intern will be trained in immigration law and eligibility for immigration relief. The intern will be expected to learn our cloud-based case management system in order to enter client information, complete forms and enter log notes. The intern will conduct preliminary intakes with new consultations and, together with the attorney, assess the individual’s eligibility for an immigration benefit. The intern will be expected to learn how to use the INA (Immigration and Nationality Act) and other primary and secondary resources to addresses complex cases. The intern will be given access to AILA-Link which is an online legal library used by our office. The intern will likely be asked to work one-on-one with clients developing written statements which are required in more complex cases such as asylum, U visas and waivers. After being trained generally, and being exposed to a variety of cases, the intern is welcome to choose to focus their time on a particular type of case (depending on what cases are open and active in the office at that time). The attorney has cases at the immigration courts in New York City and certain cases (Special Immigration Juvenile) at different Family Courts in the Lower Hudson Valley. The intern would be expected to attend some of these appearances (some may still be remote).
