Director of Business Continuity, Highmark

>> My name is George Matthews. And I am currently serving as the director of business continuity planning for Highmark here in Pittsburgh. Business continuity, what I like to tell people is that I worry for a living. Business continuity has to do with helping different parts of the business understand where their risks are and to plan for things that might go bump in the night. If there's a, you know, any kind of disruptive event. Whether it's a fire or a flood. You know, it could be something like that. Or it could be a disruption like a couple years ago here in Pittsburgh, we had the G20 meeting in Pittsburgh. And that was kind of a hoot because we had, you know, the whole downtown area was kind of disrupted. And many of our employees had difficulty getting to work. So we had to help our departments and employees and our business processes plan for how they get around that. So that's what I do. We do pay a lot of attention to events around us as they're happening. Be it, you know, natural events like weather. In our case, we have, we've built relationships with the local emergency management folks. So we have some visibility into the software that they use, for instance, that talks about the different events that are going on around town. And the impact that they may have. We do watch for that kind of stuff, sure. But a large part of our day is simply spent working with the business units to help them understand, you know, where their risks are. And how they can protect themselves. So we work with the business folks. And because technology is such a big part of everyone's business, we work a lot with the technology folks as well. To help them build systems that can be resilient. So if there's a failure, that it can pick up and get, you know, restored or, you know, get back am to service rather quickly.
