Information Security

My name is Abi and I work in Information Security for Centra Health. With living in a connected world, I think everything's connected to the internet and my team is responsible for ensuring that data that's supposed to stay safe stays safe. All the breaches you hear about in the news, all the ID thefts that go on, all the data leaks that happen, my team is responsible for maintaining security of that data and ensuring that that doesn't get out in the open. You know at the basic level, we've got what's called axis control list that guard who connects us what kind of data and moving past that we've got very expensive enterprise solutions that stop everything from malware, that stop viruses, other threats like phishing. We've got perimeter controls like firewalls and web filters, spam filters. My team essentially manages the overall architecture for all of that and ensures that everything's running smoothly. We spend a lot of time ensuring the safety of our patients. If you've got something connected to you, whether it be an insulin pump or a cardiac monitor, we wanna make sure that that device doesn't harm you. So we spend a lot of time evaluating those devices and making sure that the risk from those devices malfunctioning is very little to negligible. Typically we get sample devices from a vendor that we're evaluating. We have a pretty good test environment that we put these devices into and we kind of run it through the paces and on a typical day I might be trying to break into the device without the right credentials, trying to see if I can make it do things that the device is not supposed to do. Even though a lot of these vendors are big names and have a lot of money behind their R&D, we like to kind of have that extra layer of assurances that these aren't going to hurt our patients. As a part of an organization that takes patient safety very seriously, we love being able to play with these devices a little bit and try to break them, try to see where we can get into 'cause a lot of times these are closed off from us and it's kind of a game and a great challenge for us to try breaking into them I guess.
