Career Counselor, Career Development Center, California State University Long Beach

>> My name is Michelle, and I'm a career counselor at the Career Development Center here at Cal State Long Beach. So there's multiple roles in being a career counselor. The main role is really being a career counselor where you're helping students one on one in appointments. So you're helping them maybe with choosing majors or looking at major options, exploring different career options, some of the nuts and bolts pieces of how to write a resume, a cover letter, interview prep, job search, and then also helping with grad school. So applying to grad school and looking at education beyond their bachelor's degree. So typically getting some basic information from the students first, maybe their major, the year. If they're here to talk about not being sure what major they want to choose, we may do like career assessments such as a strong interest inventory or the Myers-Briggs to get an idea of what they like or what their personality is like and begin identifying career options that may be a good fit with who they are. We'll look at academic requirements as well. So if this is a career they're interested in, what are the majors that are associated with that? How do you declare a major? And then even giving ideas about where to start volunteering or doing internships to get some experience. If it's job search or resume, we may sit down about half hour and, and read through their resume and cover letter and give them feedback. We also do mock interviews, so we'll do practice interviews with students and help them get comfortable with that interview process and provide feedback as well.
