Overview of Dept/Division:
Operations Control Center (OCC) is a subdivision of Service Delivery in the Department of Subways. OCC is the nerve center of New York City Transit subway operations responsible for monitoring service around the clock, communicating, and responding to disruptions and major incidents, to keep the trains running on schedule. The Field Operations Services unit supports the activities of the OCC and Field Operations. It also manages the Automated Announcement Systems (AAS) on all new technology car trains. The New Tech Car lab plans and programs the AAS and ensure that the railroad fleet is up to date with accurate customer information. To
achieve our goals, we coordinate our efforts with various departments.
Project Responsibilities:
The college Aide will be assigned to Field Operations Services and will be involved in the activities of the OCC. The tasks for the college Aide will be determined based on the current needs of Field Operations Services and the skills and interests of the aide. The college aide will:
– Participate in developing, managing, and coordinating the Automated Announcement System for subway cars. Update the AAS software with new information.
– Review Field Operations Services requirements for AAS. Attend and report summary of AAS coordination meetings.
– Research issues that affect the proper operation of the AAS workstations.
– Simulate AAS in the lab and rides trains to verify that the information programmed into the AAS is accurate and the AAS is working as desired.
– Participate in working with other departments for all issues related to AAS.
– May work with Operation Policies & Procedures to familiarize with Service Delivery operations.
– Create and maintain records and databases as required. Write computer codes to automate routine tasks.
– Under the guidance of supervision may coordinate with other departments/divisions, vendors, and contractors.
Special Qualifications or Background Needed:
MAJORS PREFERRED:
Computer Science, Graphic Arts, Architecture, Transportation
Planning
A Junior, Senior or graduate student. Student with at least two semesters to graduate preferred.
– Good computer skills including Programming Languages, Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Excel and Word. Knowledge of Adobe Audition or the willingness to learn it is a must.
– Ability to conduct survey and record data. Ability to conduct basic research.
– Knowledge of New York City Transit System and New York City Geography.
– Good writing and interpersonal skills.
